- About
At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the city of Gravelines was in need of a lighthouse to indicate the mouth of the channel. The construction started in Petit-Fort-Philippe in 1837 and was completed in 1838. 30 meters high, with a fixed light, the lighthouse overlooked the sea and signaled the seamen. Although it hasn’t been used since 1989, the black & white lighthouse still dominates the skyline of Gravelines.
A panoramic view from the « black&white » lighthouse in Petit-Fort-Philippe (30 meters high) is now accessible to everyone without having to climb the 116 steps to the top! Thanks to webcams installed at the top, linked to a display screen in the entrance hall. The panoramic view can also be seen by clicking the following link: http://www.ville-gravelines.fr/Ville-Gravelines-2003%20Dossier/Ville-Gravelines-2003/V-Accueil/P-Webcam-Phare.html
