- About
Straits is an exhibition of photographs taken by Sébastien Sindeu on the theme of life in the four European Straits (Bosphorus, Gibraltar, Øresund and Pas de Calais). The photographer questions the notion of the strait as a passing area, a meeting point for two seas, a separation between two countries, and as a bridge to other continents.
In this work, Sébastien Sindeu focuses on the truth about the men and women living in the straits, what unites them and makes them differ. He attempts to give an insight of the imperceptible net which ties these true maritime gates of Europe and to present their inhabitants and their daily life.
As part of the Interreg IVA project HMS, we are proud to be able to present you the part of this exhibition on the Strait of Dover and the southern shores of the North Sea.
Strait of Dover
With between 500 and 600 ships passing through daily - a quarter of the global trade - the Strait of Dover is the busiest in the world. The density of traffic and the diversity of maritime activities make the Strait of Dover a real overseas highway.
The exhibition attempts to capture the activity along the coast or a few miles in sea. The focus is on the daily life of those who work and live in the neighbourhood of the sea. The photographs offer an interesting view on the coast's many facets: ferries, the atmosphere in the harbours, seamen, fishing industries, landscapes, seaviews and portraits,...
The exhibition will be touring in the towns partnering the project for a period of three years (2010-2012).
